In many ways, all profiling involves some form of threat assessment. When Special Agents Gregg McCrary and John Douglas went to Scarborough, a neighborhood of Toronto, in the 1990s, they evaluated a series of rapes that had escalated in brutality. At the time, they told the task force that if they didn’t identify the rapist soon, he would start killing, because the violent nature of his words and acts revealed that he would need more than sexual assault to satisfy him. They were right. It wasn’t long before that offender committed three murders.

However, that’s not the same as prospective profiling. As mentioned before, retrospective profiling uses behavioral patterns at crime scenes to assess personality and possibly predict a specific unsub’s future behavior. Prospective profiling relies on a set of characteristics and behaviors against which to compare suspects to decide if they might be dangerous now and in the near future. The analysis is appropriate for certain types of stalkers.
